The Patagonian Andes Forest Research and Extension Center (CIEFAP) is a regional public institution created with the objective of promoting the economical and social development of the Patagonian Andes forest region by generating and disseminating knowledge to encourage a sustainable use of the native and exotic forest resources and the preservation of the environment.

CIEFAP was formally created in November 1988 as an initiative of the Patagonian provinces and Universities along with several National Institutions but it did not start operating until 1990 in Esquel city, Chubut province. During the first twelve years CIEFAP had a strong support from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) agency which provided with equipment, expertise and funds to carry out research and extension projects.

CIEFAP staff includes scientists, extensionists, scholars, technicians, and administrative employees.

CIEFAP carries out its projects at the Patagonian Andes, the adjacent steppe land with a high potential for afforestation, and the irrigated river valleys. This area is 2,200 km long from Neuquén province in the north down to Estados island in Tierra del Fuego province.

Main CIEFAP actions

• Generate knowledge on the structure and dynamics of forests ecosystems.

• Contribute to the protection, conservation and health of native as well as exotic forests.

• Increase the productivity of native forests and restore degraded areas.

• Identify and promote the development of land suitable for afforestation with and without irrigation.

• Promote the use and add value to non-wood products.

• Quantify and analyze renewable natural resources and the socioeconomic sector as a contribution to land use planning processes.

• Improve harvesting techniques and the use of timber from native and exotic tree species as well as mechanical wood processing.

• Develop and maintain an efficient education and technology transfer system to improve public knowledge on forests.

CIEFAP is governed by a board of directors who are representatives from provincial and National institutions.
