Landcover and landuse information
provides important inputs to local, regional, and state land use
planning. Remote sensing data in Patagonia is actually used to generate
accurate and timely information, to produce detailed maps of landcover
at local and regional scales, and to drive analytical models that
produce increasingly accurate forest statistics. Such detailed and
increasingly affordable information (spatial and temporal attributes
of forest on different scale, their interactions, and their relationships
to socio-economic processes in the landscape) is useful to forest
managers, and also to local and state agencies who need forest information
to support their policy and mangement decisions.

Remote sensing
research on forestry applications began at CIEFAP in 1999. RS&GIS
Lab focuses primarily on optical satellite remote sensing techniques
and geospatial analysis to map and monitor environmental resources.
In addition RS&GIS Laboratory is involved with undergrate and
graduate education.
